  • Physically capable of performing the appropriate duties associated with the position with or without accommodations

  • Illinois certification required

The following is a list of responsibilities and typical duties that fall under those responsibilities. The list is general in nature and is meant to illustrate many of the things that are done by the combined efforts of all the special education paraprofessionals at all the attendance centers. Each attendance center assigns the responsibilities and duties according to what that attendance center needs to have done according to the particular time or circumstances.

 

Many of the tasks are shared. There may be items not on this list that are related to the functions of the job that a special education paraprofessional may be expected to do. The typical duties will vary according to the specific position at the particular building, and each building may have a more specific description of what the particular position entails.

 

Provide Clerical Assistance for Special Education Service:

  • Preparing needed files, entering data, and recordkeeping for IEP’s
  • Completing required forms
  • Processing, copying, and distributing accommodation sheets
  • Supervising testing for case studies
  • Typing and word processing correspondence

Provide Assistance to Special Education Teachers:

  • Copying instructional materials for certified staff
  • Scoring and recording student work
  • Assist in implementing instructional/behavioral interventions and accommodations
  • Supervise students when a teacher is not in the room

Support Special Education Students in Regular & Special Ed. Classes:

  • Assisting students and teachers with assignments
  • Assisting students and teacher during class
  • Distributing, reading and/or supervising tests and exams for LR students
  • Sending weekly monitors to parents
  • Tracking grades and notifying parents of status
  • Monitoring attendance of special education students
  • Assist teachers with behavioral interventions
  • Processing discipline paperwork
  • Supervise and assist students with learning technology skills in labs

 Provide Assistance in Special Education Office:

  • Mail pick-up and distribution
  • Answering department phones and deliver messages in a timely manner
  • Running department errands
  • Typing or data entry as requested by LR staff and tutors
  • Organizing and maintaining teacher and student hardcopy files
  • Producing and maintaining student monitor reports
  • Maintaining necessary office supplies and student supplies
  • Maintaining confidentiality appropriate within the LR area
  • Shredding sensitive material
  • Handling A/V equipment
  • Establishing and updating LR student demographics and schedules

 Provide Support for Special Education Students in Regular Education:

  • Assist in implementing instructional/behavioral interventions and accommodations
  • Works independently with students as necessary, i.e. reading tests, assisting with assigned work
  • Assist supervision of students as needed
  • Provide classroom assistance either as ongoing or as-needed basis
  • Provide input regarding LR strategies for LR students
  • Provide small group and one-on-one instructional assistance to students
  • Direct student inquiries to appropriate sources

Provide physical assistance to Special Education students:

  • Transporting to classes
  • Assisting students who are not physically independent (lunchroom, washroom, lockers, dressing for P.E.)
  • Assisting with personal hygiene
  • Setting up adaptive Equipment
  • Assisting with students to and from busses
  • Assisting students during emergency protocols
  • Recording seizures and behaviors
